This November in the MSJE

I am so proud of the Brazos UU. Even though we have not been meeting face to face due to the COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, MSJE has really taken on UU THE VOTE!

  • We completed PHASE 2 of UU THE VOTE and we saw lots of action from everyone.

  • We completed & mailed over 1380 postcards.

  • Over 30 Brazos UU members participated including 6 children and 1 dog, Bayz, helped with deliveries.

  • We are the only church in the TX UU THE VOTE that had children/adolescent helpers, so Yeh, RE!

II. The Split the Plate Recipient for Nov 2020 - Jan 2021 is the BV Food Bank. They are in great need during this COVID-19 period.

III. Gibbons Creek Coal-Powered Plant Sale and Reopening -

  • Thank you to all the Brazos UU folk who signed the petition against the reopening of the coal-powered plant and also to those who presented and/or spoke at the BTU and TMPA board meetings and city council meetings. You were noticed and your presence had a positive affect.

  • Plans are underway for Gibbons Creek Plant to be sold to a company named Charah Solutions. As part of the agreement, Charah Solutions, through its subsidiary Gibbons Creek Environmental Redevelopment Group, will take ownership of the 6,166-acre area that includes the plant, the 3,500-acre reservoir, dam and spillway and assume all environmental responsibilities. GCERG will shut down and decommission the coal power plant and complete all necessary environmental remediation work for the site landfills and ash ponds.

  • However, after Charah Solutions takes ownership of this public land, it will become private land and there is nothing to stop Charah Solutions from selling the land to a company that might convert it into a coal plant, a fracking plant, etc. Therefore, the BC/S CCL and other environmental groups will be working of encouraging lease restrictions before the sale is complete, and we may need your help again.

IV. Keep Their Bottoms Warm! Nov 1 - Dec 31, 2020. We are asking for donations of new underwear and socks for the BISD Hope’s Locker, grades K - 12. Hope’s Locker provides clothing for children designated the homeless status in the BISD. Please send all of your orders to Remember, many of the children wear large and x-large adult sizes. Please send your orders to: Project Hope, 1901 E Villa Maria, Bryan TX 77802.
