I have been invited to join the Board of the Brazos Valley Common Good group, whose mission is to build relationships in the Brazos Valley across differences in race and income or lack thereof, because these divisions in our community keep us from getting to know each other on any meaningful level. Without relationships, we are never going to understand each other, let alone do the important work of loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. BVCG plans to do this by providing opportunities for candid conversation, particularly between African American and white residents; sharing public reports from local, state and national sources for context and depth in forums on such topics as smaller-community education, housing and policing practices; listening to and learning from those affected by disparate experiences, whether individual or business treatment; and Supporting and forming relationships with other Brazos Valley organizations seeking regulatory, economic and practical actions for the common good of residents. I will talk about this in my White Supremacy Culture Class on February 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Maroon Room.
