Announcing Gabe Gelb Memorial Justice Fund & Jubilee III Scholarships

Join TXUUJM for the Jubilee III online anti-racism training Nov. 11-13! Scholarships available...

Dear Texas UUs and our justice-seeking friends,

The Texas UU Justice Ministry is proud to co-sponsor the November 11-13 Jubilee III training, an online anti-racism program that gives YOU the chance to spend a transformative weekend with leaders in Unitarian Universalism. TXUUJM joins partners and TXUUJM member churches Wildflower UU, First UU Austin and San Antonio, Live Oak UU, and San Marcos UU Fellowship in sponsoring this session of Jubilee III. Join us from anywhere in Texas for this life-changing weekend! All welcome! Can't make it? Help recruit another participant or two from your congregation! TXUUJM is offering 10 scholarships of $50 each, reducing the cost from $170 to $120. We are thankful to donors who have given in honor of TXUUJM founding board member Gabe Gelb (see more below) for making these scholarships possible. Please contact Rev. Erin Walter at txuujm@gmail.com to request a scholarship.

Register for Jubilee III by clicking on this link: https://pcolejones.wufoo.com/forms/p1wa9r510tbgj3c/

Please let TXUUJM know when you are registered.

Who are the facilitators? Jubilee III is led by three UUs who played key roles in the development and passage of the 8th principle of UUism, which was adopted by TXUUJM's board in May. You will spend the weekend with:

  • Paula Cole Jones, co-author of the 8th Principle for Unitarian Universalists, and a former president of DRUUMM (Diverse and Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries). She has served as a regional and national Racial & Social Justice Consultant for the Unitarian Universalist Association. She has 20+ years of experience in designing and facilitating programs, workshops, and dialogues for leaders and organizations.

  • Lutretia Callair, social justice activist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, organizer, and author. She is CEO of The Center for Healing and Wellness, a state-certified agency offering mental health and other clinical services to individuals, families, and groups. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Beloved Community, Lutricia developed and leads a process called Kinship Circles, with a mission to introduce and promote a way of being that brings people together to help overcome oppression and bigotries that separate us.

  • Dr. Leon Spencer, who served as UUA Interim Co-President in 2017. His work on behalf of anti-racism and anti-oppression efforts for Unitarian Universalist congregations began in 1985 when he helped establish the Black Concerns Working Group. In addition to Jubilee, he has participated with the Journey Toward Wholeness Transformation Team and the Diverse and Revolutionary UU Multicultural Ministries. He is a professor emeritus at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA.

How do I know if Jubilee III is for me? Jubilee III is for you who seek to:

  • Deepen your understanding of how race and ethnicity play out in our institutions and our daily lives.

  • Prepare yourself to take a leading role to nurture a multicultural future in the face of opposing cultural currents.

  • Be part of a critical mass of Texas UUs who have a common language around anti-racism, understand the history of racism and grasp the spiritual nature of social justice work, so we can imagine and move into building Beloved Community through our justice ministry and congregations.

  • Be in relationship with other UUs on this journey of justice and anti-oppression.

What if I’ve already done another anti-racism training?

  • This workshop meets each person at their level of experience and knowledge. Some Texas UUs who attended past Jubilee trainings are experienced anti-racism trainers, and share that they value what they gained from their interactions with the facilitators as well as other participants.

  • You’ll have an opportunity to share your knowledge and life experience with others.

  • This is a chance to connect what you know about anti-racism to UU spaces and to connect with other UUs in our region who are going to participate as well.

I'm not sure I can handle a weekend online!

  • The training format is interactive, and includes presentations, discussions, videos, exercises, small group work, and shared meals.

  • Several breaks are included and you are encouraged to take care of yourself as needed.

What Will it Cost?

$170 per person with $85 for each additional family member. (Again, please contact Rev. Erin Walter at txuujm@gmail.com to request a Gelb Fund scholarship. If cost is a further barrier, we will find a way together.)

Saturday, November 12th - 9:00 am to 8:00 pm

TXUUJM Remembers Gabe Gelb with Love and Commitment to Justice Gabriel (Gabe) M. Gelb, a civic leader whose career as a pioneering Houston market researcher and expert witness spanned 50 years, died in Seattle September 15, 2022. Born in 1929 in The Bronx, Gabe graduated from the City College of New York (CCNY). After earning a Master's degree at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, he became a reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune and founded the New Orleans Press Club.

In 1965, he formed Gelb Consulting Group, a market research firm that he headed for 25 years, then continued to conduct surveys as an expert witness in intellectual property cases. After a term as president of the Houston chapter of the American Marketing Association and a term on its national board, he became the only person ever to receive the Houston AMA Chapter's Crystal Award for Lifetime Achievement. He served also on the Boards of the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, and Houston's CCNY Alumni chapter. Gabe was a member of Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church and served on its Board of Trustees. He helped to found the Houston chapter of the Institute of Management Consultants, the Harris County Drug Court Foundation (now Justice Forward) and the Texas Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry (TXUUJM). He moved to Seattle in 2021. A celebration of his life was held there in September. He is survived by Betsy, his wife of 65 years, a professor emerita at the University of Houston, and children Laurie Gelb (the late Larry Taylor) and Richard Gelb (Jill McGrath) from Seattle and Jacki Davidoff (John) from Evanston, IL, also grandchildren Sean Taylor, Tara McGrath, Josh Davidoff, Nicolo Gelb, and Jasper Davidoff. His brother, Pete Gelb (Nancy), lives in Southampton, NY. The family asks that contributions in Gabe's memory be made to TXUUJM.org.
