7/23 Sunday Services

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

In-Person Sunday Morning Service

We are meeting in person at Neal Recreation Center at 600 N. Randolph Ave in Bryan, Texas while we build our church home.

10:30 a.m. Sunday Worship Service: "Who Loves the Dark?" by Sheri Phillabaum.

"Every year for many years, my family and I attended the Christmas eve service at First UU San Antonio, and every year the highlight for me was when they turned out all the lights in the sanctuary and everyone lit a candle as we sang Silent Night. The sanctuary full of those lights glowing in the darkness always instilled in me a sense of reverence."

Unitarian Universalists covenant to “affirm and promote the interdependent web of existence of which we are a part.” This means cherishing and preserving the wonderful and awe-inspiring diversity of human and non-human animals with all of their varying and sometimes conflicting needs. As diurnal, or day-dwelling creatures, we humans can better support the interdependent web by taking some time to learn about the needs of our nocturnal cousins. We may be rewarded with a greater sense of our own connection with the amazing interdependent web!

Dr. Sheri Phillabaum has enjoyed a 20 year career as a UU religious educator and is credentialed with the Unitarian Universalist Association at the master level. She recently retired after fifteen years as Director of Lifespan Religious Education at First UU Church of San Antonio. Her title of “Dr.” is a relic of a previous career as an English professor: Sheri holds a PH.D. in renaissance drama.

Sheri is also the author of the children’s book, Who Loves the Dark, which teaches children to appreciate the value of darkness in the natural world. Sheri and her husband Dr. Roy Ellzey are both nature lovers devoted to sustainability.
